Artist Profile
Christina Christoforou
Christina Christoforou's work often features animals, spaceships, and monsters, but her main focus is people. Christoforou is not interested in representing the world as it is though, so the people who feature in her narratives are often disguised, introducing an element of play, which is often combined with a darker, more serious edge.
Christoforou works with biros, Tipp-ex, colour pencils and newspaper cut-outs. Her personal projects include illustrations of song lyrics; while she has also exhibited music-related work and produced commercial work for record labels.
Her drawing 46 First Ladies was published in the New York Times in 2009 which lead immediately to sales of the print featuring this work.
Christoforou was born in Athens in 1974, where she grew up. She studied Graphic Design then later Illustration at Camberwell College of Arts, London and has worked as an art-director. She now works as a freelance illustrator and is based in London. Recent commissions include The New York Times, Random House, Pentagram and The National Theatre of Greece.
